Because he has realized that he has reached the last third of his life, whether he wants to or not – and he no longer wants to spend the remaining time grumpy on the stage of life. Because it doesn't bring anything to be in a bad mood about everything and everyone – and because every failure tastes happier when you go through life smiling. Maybe his aging marriage will run smoother if he is joyful while doing it. Maybe he can tolerate the current messed-up world situation better when he watch the news joyfully. Maybe he will even like the red numbers in his account when he reads the bank statement joyfully. Maybe he feels better when he joyfully looks at some of his body parts that are just hanging around him. Maybe he finds fat-free food tastier when he joyfully chews it. And maybe a colonoscopy will be more fun when he is joyful during it.
